Alnmouth is a strong little community, making a living from tourists, but not overwhelmed by them. Fossil Bank is very conveniently sited, twenty metres or so from the Red Lion ( a fine traditional English pub with an excellent informal restaurant and splendid service). There is no noise heard from it, such are the surrounding walls of the pleasant and well-tended garden. The dominant sound of the village is the clock chiming the quarters. The natives are very friendly, open and helpful: the shop opposite is one of Aladdin's outlets. We felt welcome as people, and not just for our wallets.
The Owners' fear of sand I now understand - the village is surrounded by océans of fine wind-blown sand, which is the last thing you want in a shiny cottage. The house is remarkable: the upstairs bedroom is spacious and bright - the stairs unique, and requiring a bit of self-confidence - and the bathroom is super. Didn't spend much time in the downstairs area, nor use the hi-tech stuff, but it was a joy to have proper cooking utensils on the occasions we did not eat out.
Comfy and well-equipped, the only challenge was not sliding off the skewbald bar-stools. Though not an issue for us, we feel that the folding louvred internal doors are too fragile to survive much longer, and require more care in their handling than they are likely to get. As a hide-away in the midst of delightful country, it takes some beating.
We aim to return.
