Victorian Farmhouse w/ private waterfront & pier at the mouth of Mobjack Bay

Circa 1921 - original home to sea captain W.H. Machen. This newly renovated and restored Victorian, 3 story home is part of the Village of Mobjack, a quaint village where previous life focused on fishing and crabbing. Nominated for historic significance based on its contribution to commerce and unique collections of homes located on the East River and Mobjack Bay. (fairfieldfoundation.org). The home is located on 2.6 acres with water front on the East River including a private dock giving water access to boating, kayaking, fishing and swimming along with an adjacent marina for those with larger boats (compassmarina.com).

Perfect place to relax with the family and friends while enjoying the nature and water views.

The first floor offers a parlor, spacious living room, large dining room, library/media room with TV and seating, kitchen with eating nook, mudroom with washer and dryer, full bathroom, front and back access to second floor. Second floor offers four large bedrooms all with TVs (3 kings and 1 queen), large double sink vanity with shower, and access to the third floor. Third floor offers two bedrooms (1 full bed and 2 twins), large family entertainment room with 65" TV, bar with beverage fridge and multiple seating areas.

The exterior of the house has large columns with a wrap around porch with multiple seating areas, partially screened with dining area. The porch offers views to the water and marina. Large shade trees with multiple swings for family enjoyment, picnic table, and camp fire with seating on the back side of the house (gas firepit).

Waterfront includes private 100‘ pier, floating boat dock with guards and seating area w/ campfire (gas firepit) and ten Adirondack chairs.

Incredible weekend at a perfect house. This is one of the best homes we have ever stayed in: clean, perfectly laid out, well stocked kitchen and all the yard games and puzzles you could ever need. We all slept in as the beds were so comfortable with soft sheets. And the library has a great wide variety of books to dive into. We had the best weekend and wish he had been able to stay longer.

Beautiful Getaway

The property is wonderfully idyllic and peaceful. Loved the screened-in porch and would sit out in the early morning hours and watch the deer, herons, cranes,bunnies, etc. Wish that we could have stayed longer!!

Charming coastal farmhouse

My family was looking for a property near Williamsburg for my mother’s birthday that could house all of us. The home fit the bill and totally exceeded our expectations. The home was well appointed and we spent most of the time chatting on the screened in porch or working on puzzles. The hosts were responsive and were nice enough to leave a few gifts for us. Wish we could have stayed for a week because we were having so much fun on the property. Highly recommend for folks looking for a nice retreat on the coast!

Great place for family reunion

The house truly had a lot of space with multiple places for our family to hang out. The property is very clean with lots of goodies that can keep the family entertained. Unfortunately it was very hot and humid during our stay so couldn't take advantage of the screened porch and the outside areas but the a/c worked wonderfully --- even on the top floor with thermostats on each floor! We cooked a bit and the cooking supplies were superb -- even the knives were sharp and nice Calphalon pans of all shapes and sizes were available. And the Internet access was great -- with external monitora and even printers available. Daniele and Michael clearly have given a lot of thought and care to the property! Thank you! Would highly recommend the house for any big groups that want a getaway in a rural area!

River Fun

This is a remote, quiet, spacious home located on a river cove offering wonderful sunsets. The beautiful huge oaks and wraparound porchs transport you back to lazy summer days. The Mobjack Bay village is quaint and tiny. Perfect place for a quiet getaway.

Lovely House on the Bay

We had a vacation here with 3 families including two 1.5 year olds and a 4 year old and we had a wonderful time. The kitchen and dining rooms were well equipped to handle group meals (including a high chair for babies). The outdoor space had shade and sunshibe, swings and fireflies. We rented a delivery kayak on recommendation from the owners and saw multiple osprey, including two who fought over a fish mid-flight (the fish ended up getting dropped into the bay)! It's a 20 minute drive to Haven Beach which was wonderful! The hosts were incredibly accommodating and responsive to our requests. Just a wonderful trip all around!

Security

Alarm, location of property appeared to be safe, property does not have a security alarm and bedrooms did not have secure locks or no locks at all. Otherwise, property was gorgeous and full of amenities and personal details. Beds were so comfy, and floors was spotless! The kitchen was stocked with seasonings as well as sauces in the fridge. Cleaning supplies were stocked as well.

Wonderful vacation home

Shadyhurst is a beautiful home and the property is amazing. Our family came from Tennessee, and we spent a peaceful week enjoying our time together. The home was very clean and the owners have done a wonderful job anticipating anything that you would need during your stay. Do not hesitate to book this home--you won't be disappointed.

Wonderful long weekend

The house and property are beautiful. The house has a lot of historical charm but a lot of the modern amenities. The bedrooms are huge and lots of great common spaces, including the screened in front porch. The hosts were gracious and very responsive. Great stay and definitely would come again.

Gorgeous Beautifully appointed home

Stayed here on our annual girls trip. Couldn’t be happier. The most well appointed kitchen I have ever cooked in in a VRBO house. Gorgeous hardwood floors, beautiful yard with lovely live oak trees, gracious and accommodating hosts. Three stories with lots of space and fabulous linens, and the best pillows I’ve ever slept on. Cannot recommend it highly enough

Spring break

Beautiful house, very clean and very well equipped. Great beds and linens. We had a very nice trip even though it was much colder than we expected. Would be lovely to go back in the summer and try kayaking. The location is beautiful but a bit out of the way. Great for relaxing!

A perfect family escape

We were looking for a quiet family getaway for 6 people where we could enjoy the outdoors and the bay. This couldn't have been a better choice. The owners are very friendly and very reachable. The house and its history are great. Very clean. We rented kayaks and launched from the private pier. Caught crabs and fish for dinners. Very relaxing, highly recommend.

Beautiful country home by the river

Our family had a wonderful stay at Shadyhurst. The property was exceptionally maintained and very close to the dock with access to the river and bay. The house and the kitchen had every amenity for a weeklong stay. Our family of 10 particularly enjoyed the large screened in porch set up with a large table for dining and playing games. Although the internet access was great, we ended up playing card games and hanging out in the evenings after visits to Busch Gardens, Water Country USA and Jamestown/Colonial Williamsburg which are all an hour or less from the property. The close location to the water and the beautiful property made the day trips worth it. It was so quiet with only birds, crickets and tree frogs for music at night. The beds were very comfortable and accommodated 6 adults and 4 children well. The children loved the swings and making s’mores over the fire. It was an idyllic vacation.

Peaceful Escape

Perfect for our group!

From the moment we pulled up it was just like the photo. All of the kids oohhed and ahhed as they walked through the doors! Shadyhurst was perfect for our group of 10. Our kids ranged from 6-16 and there was plenty of space! The house was spotless, kitchen fully stocked, and tastefully decorated. We loved the time spent on the dock, whether attempting to catch something or relaxing on the Adirondacks. The beds were super comfy too which is a huge plus!! We would definitely stay there again, maybe longer next time!

Beautiful home with lots of Extras!

We have stayed at many VRBO properties and this rated among the best! The house was beautiful, clean and there were so many extra touches, like plenty of towels, table clothes, spices, and even bottles of wine, that made the trip and our time there extra special. We plan to return!
