Nueces River Escape sits on 15 private acres outside Camp Wood, with a view of the mountains and no neighbors in sight. The Nueces River is close by: there are two good public access points within five minutes of the house, and the neighborhood has its own community river area for guests. Either way, you can swim, wade or kayak.
The house has been carefully renovated. The open kitchen and living room center on a wood-burning rock fireplace, with green cabinets, butcher-block counters and a farmhouse sink. The primary bedroom has its own bath, a second bedroom uses the full hall bath, and a side room with a queen bed takes extra guests. The mattresses are Tuft & Needle, and the coffee maker is a Moccamaster.
Most days start in the sunroom across the back of the house, with floor-to-ceiling windows and a view of the deer feeder, where whitetail and axis deer come in at dawn. At night the sky takes over. On a clear night the Milky Way is easy to see, and the telescope is there for a closer look.
Outside there is a deck with a tree over it, a fire pit with Adirondack chairs facing the view, a hammock, and a stone barbecue and smoker. Fiber internet reaches inside and out if you need to work, and there is an EV charger on site.
Early check-in may be available on request. Every stay includes the Texas Hill Country Travel App, a local guide for exploring the area.
WHY WE LIKE IT
When people ask what we like about this one, we start with the night sky. It is a Bortle 2 dark-sky zone, about as dark as skies get, and there is a telescope in the sunroom. Mornings are just as good: coffee from the Moccamaster while whitetail and axis deer come up to the feeder outside the windows. And the Nueces is five minutes away when you want the river.
