Breathe in the fresh sea air whilst you enjoy panoramic views of the open water when you stay in this rustic gem we call: ‘THE LIGHTKEEPERS LODGE’ This completely self contained space is beautifully presented with a traditional nautical edge whilst embracing modern luxury. This little home is well equipped, with a little kitchen area and shower and toilet and is steeped in history being the ‘front watch space’ for the West Usk Lighthouse which is the back drop to this unique space. This detached little home is completely self contained and has recently been restored and refurbished. It was recently featured on BBC's 'My Unique B&B' in July 2022 and can be seen on catch up, series 2 episode 5. All the windows in the The Lightkeepers Lodge have a beautiful outlook. The private decked terrace leads to the front door, relax there whilst taking in the breathtaking surroundings. The picnic tables on the banks surrounding The Lodge offers a perfect setting for alfresco dining in the beautiful summer evenings that we have here. This magical little place is hidden at the end of a 0.7 mile private drive, above the sea wall and nestled perfectly against the back drop of the historic 200 year old West Usk Lighthouse. The sea wall outside the lodge has a large firepit for warmth at night. Please bring your own coal and briquettes available at the local Asda. Guests can walk along the sea wall to Cardiff, 10 miles away. On the left of our cabin, there is a little sandy beach when the tide is out. If you want to forget the outside world and have a few days of total relaxation in a remote location, this is for you. Other things to note: Please bring a couple of towels, outdoor slippers and dressing gowns for the hot tub if you are going to use it. We do have some disposable slippers. Rest assured when we have events or weddings here, the lodge is not available for booking.
The West Usk Lighthouse is not a bed and breakfast but our family home now. We ran it as a well known b&b for over 30 years, but stopped in 2020 during the pandemic. Now we just offer self catering and we are still a wedding venue - in our marquee offering space for up to 100 guests. The place has a very relaxed feel as it is surrounded by the beauty of the estuary and animals roaming around as well as hundreds of swans resting here in early Spring.
There are many places of interest nearby, too many to mention. It is best to Google! There is a National Trust property called Tredegar House - 5 minutes away. Cardiff is only 10 miles from the lighthouse. The Wales Coastal Path runs on the sea wall. The Lighthouse Inn is a 20 minute walk. Biking trails, horse riding, the Velodrome, the ICC at the Celtic Manor, the Roman town of Caerleon, the Welsh Life Museum, the 14 Locks, are all easy to get to. There are lots of good golf courses too.
