We could wright that this is an authentic special experience like so many others, but to be honest it's not that special in comparison with other more authentic ryokan and minshuku throughout Japan. Touristic temple hotels are big business on Koyasan and the monks now it. You will notice that fact in some way or another during your stay. The prices are not reasonable for what you'll get in the end. But what can you do about it if you, like us, wish to stay in a Japanese monastery?
Regarding this particular place it's smaller than a lot of the other temples and we only saw about five or six monks. The room was clean and the futons comfortable. Small but beatiful courtyard garden outside the room. Meals were good, but if you want the best food around you should check out other places. For us the portions were too small, especially breakfast, so we walked pass the grocery store for some extra calories afterwards. Regarding interaction with the monks you shouldn't expect too much. They'll give you a brief check in tour and you'll see them during the morning ceremony, but that's it.
