Pleasant with gorgeous garden walks
It was most enjoyable. The only quibble was that some of the kitchen utensils weren't the best, making it difficult to prepare vegetables!

Love this place, so rewinding and switching off from busy scenery to such beautifully scenery from our cottage window and walking through such beautiful garden. We rode our mountains bikes close-by- A W E S O M E

Quaint Cottage

A Perfect Tonic
Summer or Winter Flaxmere is the perfect place to unwind and leave the troubles of your particular world at the gate. A warm welcome from Penny, a log fire and acres of beautiful gardens to wander though. Add good friends, great food and a bottle or two of your favourite wine and you have the perfect weekend. Truly, a tranquil oasis for the soul. Thank you Penny, we will be back again soon.

South Island Highlight
The beautiful garden is a joy to visit and superbly planted with a magnificent combination of interesting plants and spaces. It was a privilege to stay in the well-appointed peaceful cottage and view the garden at different times of the day. One of our favourite gardens in NZ. Penny is a welcoming hostess who took the time to share her extensive gardening knowledge with us. A highlight of our trip around the Sth Island.

A city gardeners dream
Is it the birdsong, the frogs softly chirruping, the sussurating leaves, the scent of a hundred roses, the green-limned sightlines to the foothills of the alps, or the meandering paths between the garden's many rooms? Whatever it is, something irrefusable at Flaxmere eased away our urban stress in seconds. Recommended as a base for a weekend exploring the upper Hurunui and learning some great gardening from an expert and her land.

Lovely, Peaceful Getaway - Highly Recommend
We stayed for a birthday weekend, and it was more than I had hoped. The home and garden combine to create a feeling of calming beauty and relaxation that other accommodations simply can't offer. The endless sound of birdsong during the day and frogs at night help the mind escape. Decades of hard work are evident in an absolutely stunning retreat. Penny herself was an added bonus, a kind and down-to-earth soul. Thank you for sharing your space for a great weekend.

A memorable first visit to Flaxmere Gardensre
Exceptionally interesting and comfortable stay: a charming hostess, a superb country garden, a book and an exhibition about Flaxmere which gave us the background, a supply of logs and a wood fire which kept us cosy during a cold snap and 2 friendly dogs. We look forward to our next visit.

Botanical Cottage Hideaway
Absolutely must stay experience surrounded by vegetation which has been carefully selected to choreograph the landscape and surrounding environment. Thank you Penny I thought I new a little about about plant biology/environmental biology but you have married everything well just an absolute delight from someone who has qualifications in biology but has spent most of his working carrier in medical science. A special thank you from myself and my wife for looking after us.

Beautiful get away from Christchurch
What a wonderful place this is to stay. The famous gardens are beautiful, and the cottage extremely comfortable. The log burner keep us toasty, and the kitchen has everything you need. Confortable beds, and how wonderful to awake to birdsong each morning. To top things off Penny is a wonderful host. So top rated, and this will be the first of many visits I expect.

One of the lovely things for me in having people stay in my cottage is the sound of children loving being here. Watching them look for fish in the ponds and appreciating the birdsong and all the flowers. It is a real joy

A Wonderful Experience
An amazing internationally acclaimed 7 acre garden with a lovely homely cottage. Penny the host is a talented visionary and creative garden artist. And very friendly. We had 3 days of sheer joy despite the mixed bag of weather. Highly recommend it without hesitation

Amazing getaway
A very clean, simple, warm and tidy cottage situated away from roads in the middle of an amazing garden. We stayed in autumn, and it was so spectacular with patches of red, orange, and green all over the place. There is something touching in watching how leaves are falling to the ground! Definitely will come again.

Autumn is a very special time here, the change of seasons is a real joy. Winter can be just as beautiful with bare branches and soft light with long shadows!

Cozy and comfortable in beautiful surroundings
Although we had poor weather during our stay, we enjoyed the cozy and comfortable cottage, plenty of room, warm fire and beautiful views of the gardens and countryside. You could spend days exploring the grounds, it is incredible that one person could create such a special place. The pool area is the perfect bonus on a hot day. Would like to come back in spring to explore the garden in full bloom

We had the most amazing stay in this stunning, peaceful environment - this property is truly magical. There were heaps of great activities in the surrounding area (wineries, walks, Hanmer Springs), but we enjoyed staying in just as much! Walking through the spectacular gardens, playing in the pool with the kids, chatting with Penny and her family, or just reading a book with a nice glass of wine, this place is so relaxing, we just loved it!

Fantastic place to stay
It was super quiet on an amazing expansive grounds that you could spend a day wandering. Also having use of the private pool was fantastic and our toddler loved everything about being there. Owner was very friendly and the house was in good condition. Highly recommended for a quiet getaway.

Amazing Botanical Retreat
Flaxmere gardens is an amazing botanical retreat in the middle of pristine farm country. The cottage was beautifully situated with its own lawn and gardens and was well appointed with plenty of wood for a cozy fire and super comfy beds. Penny was a fabulous host and we much enjoyed sharing a wine or two with her and finding out more about her incredible journey. We would highly recommend this property for a relaxing reconnect to the countryside. Gerry & Joel.

Relaxing stay at Flaxmere
The cottage is set in a very large and charming garden. The location is not far from the lakes and wineries. We had a very relaxing stay over 2 days. The owner was helpful and happy to chat about the property. Cleanup work was underway after recent gales but we were able to spend time walking and sitting in the garden and take in its early spring colours.

Great cottage with amazing surrounds
A great weekend stay on a working farm with acclaimed gardens that must be enjoyed when you stay. Owner Penny has spent 50yrs creating the gardens which are a delight even in the depth of winter. Cottage was warm, quiet and had everything we neeed.

Relaxing country getaway
We had a lovely restful stay at Flaxmere Gardens - exploring the gardens with our two kids, with the fantails flying alongside, was magical. Families with very young children should note the pond beside the cottage is now empty, so no issue there. The cottage was rustic and we loved sitting by the fire. I found the bed and bedding so comfortable and slept wonderfully. Penny twice called in family members to help when our rental car battery died - so appreciated! Hope to one day return in summer so we can enjoy the pool!
