Fantastic apartment in a great neighborhood
We really enjoyed our stay in the apartment. It has everything you need for a month's stay, including a well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds and a fast internet connection. The apartment is both beautifully designed and very comfortable. The location is great, right in the middle of Harlem, and staying here offers a unique opportunity to explore local culture, history and architecture. It's close to Central Park and there are several subway stations nearby with fast connections to other parts of Manhattan. The host Dennis is very helpful and responsive, and as fans of design and architecture, we really appreciated learning more from him about this beautiful building. Altogether a fantastic experience!

Great Hiding Away in Harlem
My wife and I stayed in Dennis's Harlem brownstone for 30 days in October-November 2022 and thoroughly enjoyed it. The unit was well equipped, clean, and beautiful. It was always a pleasure to return to our temporary home after days running around Manhattan and also just to take days off to spend at "home." The neighborhood was pleasant and quiet, and close to subway stations. Whatever we needed was always available nearby (e.g. several groceries, cafes/bakeries, pharmacies, etc.). Plus, Dennis is a wonderful host who has lived in the neighborhood for many years and is deeply involved in it. He was always responsive to any questions we had and really made a good 30 days even better. Great host, dwelling, and neighborhood in NYC!

Comfortable and Peaceful NYC Getaway
We cannot recommend this space highly enough - it was absolutely perfect! It's a well-maintained and historic brownstone on a quiet residential tree-lined street that will help you forget that you're even in NYC. It's still super close to all sorts of great restaurants, shops, and entertainment, though, so you won't be at a loss for things to do. It's also close to a bunch of bus and subway lines which makes it easy to get wherever you need to go. The host is wonderful, communicative, kind, and there whenever you need him. 5 stars for sure!

Awesome
My husband and I stayed for a month in this great appartment. Everything you need is just there! We enjoyed every day. Dennis is easy to communicate and gives you lots off information abouth the neighbourhood. With the subway around the corner you can visit every part of the city. Greenwich Village, the Bowery, Tribeca etc. And also Queens, Hoboken , Staten Island and Brooklyn. After a day full of impressions it was always very nice to come " home" at the appartment. We had a great time!!!

Harlem Happy
My wife and I spent the month of May living in this Harlem apartment to be around our daughter while she was having her first child. We have used VRBO in many places with much success : Paris, Idaho, Hawaii, and Georgia. This Harlem experience was as nice as any we have had. The property owner, Dennis, is a wonderful person as well as a top notch host. He provides a quality experience in one of the great neighborhoods of New York. We were provided everything we needed to live like we were at home and had so many interesting options to experience NYC just out our door. We loved it all.

The best place to stay in New York
We spent nearly 4 months in this charming cosy cocoon. The Parlor Apartment provides everything you need: it is luminous, calm, comfortable (very well heated during Winter which is not always the case in NY) and close to subway and bus stations. The neighborhood is also very nice. We extended our stay there because we felt at home. Dennys, the owner is the perfect host. He is very discreet but also considerate to his guests, always happy to help. Don't hesitate to book it. it is worth it!

Second tine and hoping a third.
Our second stay at Dennis´ parlor was as good or even better than our first. Dennis is always ready to help, to advice, to propose current events in the city according ours interests. Any technical comments about the nice apartment, the historic house, the warm neighborhood have the big plus of the human factor, the lanlord. We are planning our third stay.

Good Value, Nice Place
My wife and I enjoyed the Parlor Apartment. Very comfortable bed, good shower, neat neighborhood, convenient to the Subway, and just a few blocks away from Central Park. Had breakfast one morning down the street at Harlem Shake. Had dinner one night a few blocks over at Harlem Pizza. Both delicious! The apartment and the neighborhood are full of personality. I'd recommend this spot to anybody.

A Clean Ecelectic Apartment... in a historical neighborhood.
This was the perfect apartment for our extended stay. The apartment really worked well for the 3 of us. The clean, well-equipped kitchen has everything needed... and having a washer & dryer was certainly a plus. The apartment is very convenient to the subway making the entire city accessible. We loved the eclectic furnishings coupled with the beautifully restored 1890's brownstone. Dennis goes over everything with you when you arrive... and is always near & available when needed. Couldn't be better
We echo all the previous glowing comments. We had a wonderful time in Harlem, really enjoyed the area and couldn't think of a better place to stay than Dennis' apartment. It is supremely comfortable and Dennis really has thought of everything you could need. We won't repeat what others have noted but will add our appreciation of a sofa that is truly comfortable to sit on as opposed to the usual holiday apartment offerings and the excellent, quiet aircon in both the living room and bedroom (which we appreciated on a few very hot days). It's a charming apartment to hang around in. We loved returning to the dappled lighting in the living room and waking up in the morning to the garden view. Dennis is the perfect host. We really hope to return.

A real Home away.
It was our fourth stay at the house.And second in this particular apartament.We really feel at home there from day one.Dennis is a dream host,extremely helpful and the apartament has everything you could possibly need and much more.Books/press/music with NY/Harlem flavour are a nice touch.We also highly recommend the area with great wine shop opened till late just around the corner,eating places blossoming around.On weekends try the Bill's place jazz club hosting only ca. 20/!/ people and a gospel mass in one of the many churches.Have a walk to the northern tip of Central Park and walk,walk,walk. Magnífica estancia en New York con mi mujer y mi hermana
Precioso apartamento magníficamente equipado con todo lo necesario y más para tener una estancia cómoda, y con muchos accesorios y detalles. Como curiosidad decir que nos hemos encontrado con ¡tres cafeteras!, cada una de un tipo diferente. La zona donde está situado el apartamento es muy agradable, y con servicios de todo tipo. Las líneas 2 y 3 de metro a pocos pasos y a tres o cuatro paradas de Times Square. Además, en un corto paseo a pie se llega a Central Park. Lo mejor de todo el propietario, Dennis, una persona muy agradable, simpático y muy educado.. Nos estaba esperando a nuestra llegada y nos estuvo enseñando el apartamento para que suipiésemos dónde estaba cada cosa, explicándonos el funcionamiento de los electrodomésticos, atendiendo a todas nuestras dudas. Además de que en el apartamento tiene abundante documentación sobre la zona con la situación de tiendas, supermercados, restaurantes, espectáculos, sitios de interés, etc., nos estuvo haciendo una serie de recomendaciones y sugerencias para que nuestra estancia fuese más agradable. Además, se ve que es un enamorado de esa zona y la vive y conoce perfectamente. Él vive en un dúplex arriba del apartamento, y se nos ofreció para resolvernos cualquier duda que nos surgiera. En definitiva que, de volver a Nueva York, con total seguridad volvería a alojarme en el mismo apartamento. Un diez, sobre todo para Dennis.

Wonderful Secret Hideaway in the Big Apple
This was a perfect retreat for my husband and I to stay in Manhattan. Everything we needed was supplied. The beautiful old brownstone reflected the charm of yesteryear with a stylish, new full-sized kitchen. It was very well stocked with all the amenities you could ask for. It also had the convenience of a washer & dryer which we used three times during our stay. Being a cold and wet March, we were happy to snuggle into the wonderfully comfortably firm queen sized bed. The bedding was luxiourius and felt like it was from a 5 star hotel. The Parlour Apartment is more than adequately heated by two radiators. Dennis is a wonderful host whom we had to contact several times prior to our visit regarding travel issues with a blizzard that closed all the NYC airports for over two days. Dennis allowed us to reschedule our visit for the following month. What a relief! Dennis greeted us upon arrival and answered our endless questions with patience. Upon his suggestion, we went to Amateur Night at the Apollo Theatre on Wednesday evening. What an enjoyable and entertaining time we had. We finished the night by eating great old fashioned style cheeseburgers and fries at Harlem Shake. Dennis gave us input on using the NY subway system. Being from a rural Northern CA farm town, it took us a while to master the subterranean train system. We visited for 8 days and each bought the week long subway pass, which I would highly suggest. The Harlem Hideaway is only about 3 blocks to the subway. We found the neighborhood to be friendly & easy to navigate. There were several markets and restaurants within a 10-20 min walking distance. The huge flat screen TV had great cable and the free internet was quick and efficient. The only thing I would change was the chilly weather which was in the 30-40's each day with a few days of rain. We traveled all over Manhattan and still didn't see all the sights. So Dennis, we hope to see you and the Harlem Hideaway soon again, but in warmer weather! Thank you very much, Mary & Mark Olsen

Perfect!
Loved, loved, loved this place. Beautiful, historic brownstone. Fully equipped, very clean, very comfortable. Great neighbourhood. Only 3 short blocks to the subway, where you can get just about anywhere. Excellent grocery store right by subway stop. 9 short blocks to Central Park. Dennis has thought of everything you could possibly need to make your stay comfortable. I will definitely want to stay here on my next trip to NY.

Perfecto, mejor de lo esperado
La estancia ha sido perfecta, fuimos en febrero hacia mucho frio en la calle pero dentro se estaba muy caliente, al apartamento no le falta de nada, esta a 5min del metro y el barrio es nuy tranquilo. Vaya si vuelvo a NY no dudare de repetir.

Fantastic apartment and great location
We really enjoyed our stay! The location made everything we wanted to do easy and fast. We spent time in Harlem and it was great. We felt completely safe, very family oriented. The apartment itself was also great! It was clean and comfortable, and had everything we needed. Would definitely recommend. Only downside there was no landline, as Canadians this means we were unable to make any outgoing calls, ie Ordering in food. When we arrived late Dennis still showed us around the apartment and talked to us about the neighbourhood! He was very kind and wants to make your stay memorable.

Warm, wonderful Brownstone apartment
We loved staying in Dennis' beautifully decorated apartment. It was cozy and warm inside, even though the weather was cold outside. Un superbe appartement idéalement situé pour visiter New York
En couple avec notre fille de 9 ans, nous avons séjourné chez Dennis pendant 10 jours du 20 au 30 octobre 2016. L'appartement est spacieux, très propre, très bien agencé et parfaitement équipé, absolument rien ne manque! C'est une base idéalement située pour visiter New York: à deux minutes de marche vous trouverez un accès au métro express (lignes 2 et 3) qui vous mènera rapidement au coeur de la ville (Central Park, Times Square, 34th Street, Wall Street, l'embarcadère pour aller voir la statue de la Liberté, etc). Le nord de Central Park est même à 10 min de marche à peine, idéal pour les footings, courir dans ce parc est magique! L'appartement étant situé dans Harlem, le gros plus est le calme retrouvé le soir après les longues journées de visite! Aucun problème pour dormir! Ne manquez pas de découvrir le quartier autour de l'appartement: Columbia University à l'ouest, la 125ème rue au nord; pour manger: le Caffe Latte à deux pas, le restaurant Amy's Ruth sur la116ème rue. Il y a un supermarché où l'on trouve de tout juste à côté du métro (116ème / Malcolm X). Dennis, le propriétaire, vit dans la même maison; il est d'une rare gentillesse, discret tout en restant disponible pour toute question. Il saura vous donner d'excellents conseils pour visiter la Ville. Nous avons adoré ce premier séjour à New York. L'l'Empire State Building DE NUIT, la statue de la liberté avec montée en haut de la couronne (à réserver plusieurs mois en avance...), Le pont de Brooklyn, la High Line, le Guggenheim, la 5ème avenue, The Lion King sur Broadway à deux pas de Times Square, ont été les temps forts de notre séjour, à ne pas manquer! Et il y a bien plus à découvrir! Nous avons été enchantés par ce séjour, New York vaut le voyage, et nous recommandons le Harlem Hideway. Merci Dennis et au plaisir de vous revoir lors d'un prochain séjour à New York.

Harlem Hideaway - und Du hast ein Nest gefunden in New York
Nach einem anstrengenden Flug mit nur einer Stunde Zwischenstop in Reykjavik und einer höllischen Probefahrt mit New Yorks Metro gelangten wir in den sichern Hafen von Harlem Hideaway und Dennis Decker gab uns vom ersten Kennenlernen an die Sicherheit: You are safe in Harlem, your apartment is your refuge. Die Wohnung selbst hielt allen Erwartungen der Internetpräsentation stand: eine außergewöhnlich möblierte gemütliche Zweizimmerwohnung auf hohem Standart (sorgfältig restauriertes Interieur, individuelles Mobiliar, Massivholzküche, bequemes Doppelbett, Fenster können nachts offen gelassen werden, kein Lärm), Einstimmung auf Big Apple durch ein über 400 Titel umfassendes Jazz-, Soul- und Poprepertoire der Extraklasse, individuelle Betreuung, das alles erdet einem nach einem tagsüber übervollem Sightseeingprogramm. Man sitzt mit Dennis am Samstagmorgen auf den Stufen seines Hauses, während er seine New York Times liest und diskutiert über Amerikas Blick auf die Welt oder besser auf seine eigene als Weltbürger, denn das ist einer der Gründe, warum er seine Wohnungen an Menschen aus aller Welt vermietet. Ich hatte den Eindruck, in den wenigen Tagen meines Aufenthaltes einen Freund zurückgelassen zu haben.

Trendy Wohnung, schöner Garten, interessanter Treppensitz. Sehr gute und komplette Einrichtung. Lage und Nachbarschaft ruhig und ideal, sehr gute Anbindung durch die Subway, super netter Vermieter. Lediglich Bad und Küche hätten sauberer sein können (aber wir sind auch pingelig).

Es tut mir furchtbar leid, dass es bei der Reinigung Probleme gab, denn ich habe tatsächlich in 250 Bewertungen noch nie eine Beschwerde bekommen. Auf jeden Fall möchte ich sichergehen, dass das nicht nochmal passieren wird, und ich werde von jetzt an persönlich prüfen, dass alles zu meiner und meiner Gäste Zufriedenheit geputzt wurde. Parlour in Harlem Hideaway
Great apartment very comfortable and full of quirky things. Every effort made to giver the holiday maker wonderful experience. Good restaurants all within walking distance of the apartment. The 7 day subway pass a must and a bargain. However it would have been helpful to have instructions for the excellent electrical appliances (so different from the UK ones). Also a slip mat in the bath just to prevent any accidents when showering. Overall a superb holiday was had by both of us

A Home in an Oasis
To the core: we are working out another stay at Dennis¨ house for this year. Do you need more information? With my wife we were there last June, a two weeks stay in the wonderful Harlem. As many times, a house is a projection of his owner and this house is a masterpiece. Also it is his home and that do a big difference. Dennis is helpful at any unusual need and always ready to add much more than expected. The parlor is well equipped, confortable, artistic. It is homely. The block is residential and around the corner are markets, stores, delis and street food. The buses stop is at 100 meters, an excellent option for sightseeing the city. The subway station at three blocks, quick to the south. I shall not take your time writing about NYC; everywhere the information is available. Perhaps I can tell you something about Harlem. At evening, when we return from a full day walking on the streets, physically exhausted and emotionally plenty, arriving to Harlem was like to an oasis, where the life slow down to senses and spirits. Perfect Stay in Harlem
Our overall experience was wonderful! Dennis was warm and welcoming! The Harlem hideaway is clean, comfortable and stylish. It's conveniently located near the 2/3 express train which makes getting to lower Manhattan a breeze. 12 minutes to Times Square! There is a lovely little shared backyard or if you want to watch the neighborhood you can sit on the front stoop. We explored the surrounding neighborhood and found no shortage of gems that make Harlem unique and special. There are a number of restaurants in the area - we loved cocktails at Dirty Taco, chicken & waffles at Amy Ruth's and my son's favorite was burgers, fries & shakes at Harlem Shake. After long days of walking the Hideaway was a comfortable home away from home. We slept well each night. Dennis was able to give suggestions, fix our air conditioner and print out tickets for shows. His love for the building and neighborhood is apparent!

Thank you for being such great guests. There was an AC mishap thankfully you alerted me so I could fix it as quickly as possible. We provided temporary window units until the issue was fixed, but please return to experience the wall units that are working now in perfect order!

Perfect base for exploring NYC
We were more than satisfied with the parlor apartment and it made for a fantastic base for visiting NYC. Well appointed with an artistic flair and well sized for our family if 4. The beds were very comfortable and it was quiet for a good night's rest. The neighborhood is safe, friendly and there are various cafes and restaurants within a short walk. I can highly recommend this property for anyone looking for a more unique experience than found in a hotel. We would definitely come back.

Wir haben bereits zum dritten Mal im Harlem Hideaway gewohnt und sind mit den Wohnungen sehr zufrieden. Die Ausstattung und der Zustand der Apartements entsprechen in allen Punkten der Beschreibung. Dennis ist stets hilfsbereit, sehr freundlich und der Buchungsvorgang verlief reibungslos. Wir können das Harlem Hideaway uneingeschränkt empfehlen!
