I’m sorry to hear of a guest not enjoying their stay. Unfortunately this guest had unusually dreadful weather, thunderstorms, and rain most days, and I suspect that this is what has triggered quite such a negative review. After 15 years of welcoming guests, and receiving 5-star reviews, I guess it was inevitable that we would eventually get a less complimentary review. It’s especially disappointing that the only positives our lovely house and pool earned was that it was “clean and comfortable”, however given the several emails a day I received each day in the week before arrival, I had feared this conclusion. I patiently discussed cots, broadband strength, microwave, bus journeys and if access was easy, Wi-Fi password, hairdryers, cot bed linen etc. None of these many emails enquired about pantry items or requested a welcome pack which I could have easily supplied. We usually ask about this, but I honestly forgot, as so few people want them. I did however give her a late check out for no additional cost and extra changes of bed linen for the cot in case of need. I arranged and paid on G’s behalf for the extra cot requested, upgraded the broadband so it could reach the baby’s bedroom for a radio G wanted to be able to play. I also worried that the microwave being a few years old might not be reliable, so bought a new one for her. Re the complaints: Firstly, the villa is self-catering: however there was water, oil and vinegar and salt, but we now have to throw all other food items away as we cannot guarantee that they are not stale or ant-infested which is something we have found in the past. I would rather have a complaint re the lack of foodstuffs than a guest find tainted foods. I received an email from G on her first morning complaining that there was no dish drainer, or hand towels and not enough hand soaps. I replied saying that I was answering in brief as I had just got home from travelling, was rushing but wanted to acknowledge her email. I explained that the dish drainer was in the cupboard under the sink, I apologised for the lack of soaps and towels and said this would be rectified, and said that I hoped the minor issues were not having an adverse effect on her holiday. I got a reply asking if I had meant to be so dismissive, and detailing many other apparent shortcomings, so I replied at longer length, only to be told this was inappropriate. Re the area: the small local beach is extremely clean. I have never had a comment before about this, and I’ve looked at area reviews too and been unable to find any reference to this. Cyprus regularly receives awards for the cleanliness of its beaches. One of G’s other issues I was emailed about was the smell she reports. Not being there at the time and never having smelled anything there before, I couldn’t explain what was causing it, but as with the unfortunate weather, I can only apologise about the bad timing. My manager reported that the one very small field across the road had some fertiliser spread on it, so that may well have been the cause. I’m sure given how close the house is to the sea, this won’t be a continuous issue. I agree that there was a glitch in the hand soap department, and I will also now always ask if guests would like a welcome pack!
