Cumberland Queen Cottage

Our family owns the ferry service to Cumberland Island. The cottage pays tribute to the Ferrys that have taken passengers to the Island for the past 30 years. The Cumberland Queen was the first ferry. The current ferrys are The Cumberland Princess, The Cumberland Lady and the Cumberland Queen II. We have two original wheel house windows from the Cumberland Queen that were salvaged after it sank during hurricane Irma in 2017. You will have a two block walk to board the Cumberland Queen II on your visit to beautiful Cumberland Island. You will have views of the St. Marys River from your front porch and bedroom 2. The back patio overlooks the History Walking Park. Many restaurants and shops are within walking distance from the cottage.

This townhome has recently been renovated with new appliances and furniture. Each bedroom has a full bath and smart TV. There is a half bath downstairs. Fully stocked kitchen with new appliances and washer and dryer. Dining room accommodates 4-6, also dining on the patio. Large smart TV in living room, free high speed internet. Seating on front porch with river views.

  • Dungeness on Cumberland Island, Georgia, is a ruined mansion that is part of a historic district that was the home of several families significant in American history. James Oglethorpe first built on Cumberland Island in 1736, building a hunting lodge that he named Dungeness. Oglethorpe named the place after Dungeness, in England. The next Dungeness was the legacy of Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene, who had acquired 11,000 acres of island land in exchange for a bad debt. His widow built a four-story tabby mansion in 1803, over a Timucuan shell mound. During the War of 1812 the island was occupied by the British, who used the house as a headquarters. In 1818 Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee, a dashing cavalry commander during the Revolutionary War and father of Robert E. Lee, stayed at the house until his death on March 25, 1818, cared for by Greene's daughter Louisa, and was laid to rest in nearby cemetery with full military honors provided by an American fleet stationed at St. Marys, Georgia. The house was abandoned during the U.S. Civil War and burned in 1866. In the 1880s the property was purchased by Thomas M. Carnegie, brother of Andrew Carnegie, who began to build a new mansion on the site. The 59-room Queen Anne style mansion and grounds were completed after Carnegie's death in 1886. His wife Lucy continued to live at Dungeness and built other estates for her children, including Greyfield for Margaret Carnegie, Plum Orchard for George Lauder Carnegie, and Stafford Plantation. By this time, the Carnegies owned 90% of the island. The Carnegies moved out of Dungeness in 1925. In 1959 the Dungeness mansion was destroyed by fire, alleged to be arson. The ruins are today preserved by the National Park Service as part of Cumberland Island National Seashore. They were acquired by the Park Service in 1972.

Cottage is beautifully decorated, comfortable living areas, fully equipped kitchen, with areas for outside sitting. Within walking distance to boardwalk and downtown. We captured amazing sunrises and sunsets.

Beautiful property tastefully decorated and updated with lots of room and very clean. The host was very welcoming and had lots of info on things in town to do and see. She was an excellent communicator. Property was close to downtown and could be walkable if need be.

Excellent property. Very clean. Close to everything. The host was very responsive to all questions. The only thing I could see an issue for older folks would be that the bed height was very high. Really liked the seating area and tv in each bedroom. Would def stay again if in the area!!

Such a beautiful town home! The furnishings were top notch from the inviting decor, comfortable beds, down feather pillows, kitchen supplies, beach chairs and more! The townhome was so clean and fresh we didn’t want to leave! Perfect location to explore the quaint town of st. Mary’s and the history surrounding the area. Gorgeous townhome!

Perfect Getaway

This was a wonderfully located gem situated in the heart of downtown St. Mary's. a beautiful, clean space overlooks the marsh, perfect scenery for your morning coffee or sunset-watching cocktail. We were able to visit Fernandina Beach, Tybee, Cumberland Island all within an hour. Very gracious host.

Relaxing Home & Great Location

My wife & I stayed here for our Anniversary. It was a comfortable stay with everything we needed. The house was a great location to restaurants, stores, & the downtown waterfront of St. Mary's. This was a perfect place for us to visit St. Mary's and our day trip to Cumberland Island.We would highly recommend this property to others. It was a memorable weekend & relaxing stay.

Cutest little cottage

The pictures do not do this place enough justice. This was our first time in St. Mary's and I was traveling with myself and two small children. We pulled up and immediately just love with everything about it. From the cute little front porch to entering the home itself. I went shopping before hand but was surprised by all the little things they had available. The beds were comfortable and the home felt truly welcoming to make yourself comfortable during your stay. You could see the sunset from one of the bedroom windows but did go on the pier which is literally across the street to take in some views. My son, who is obsessed with boats, enjoyed seeing all the sailboats. The walk into town was very doable for a 5 & 7 year old as we easily walked into town the day we took the ferry to Cumberland. The owner was very accessible and more than accommodating, even mailed my child's toy we left behind. This definitely wont be our last time at St Mary's, I cant wait to revisit and will surely book this place again.

Amazing all around

This is truly one of the best places we have ever rented. The owner is amazing, great communication and very prompt with responses. The townhouse was very clean, very well stocked and the special touches in the home were all very welcoming and made us feel at home. The location is perfect, within walking distance of everything in St Mary’s. Honestly cannot say enough amazing things.

Perfect property!

This was a mother daughter trip which we do every year with my now 90 year old mother. We found the cottage to be very clean, beautifully decorated and fully stocked with everything we needed down to water bottles in the frig. Beds were comfy and there were lots of towels. The only caveat is that had there been 4 of us one of the beds was quite small, a full I believe and although it smelled wonderful inside the fragrance was a bit strong. The living area was perfect for relaxing in the evenings and the location was within walking distance from the quaint downtown historical district and the ferry. There is a beautiful dock right across the street to enjoy the River view and a great riverside park just down the street. Parking for both vehicles is right in front. I would highly recommend this property!

St Mary’s Vacation

We loved this property! The host did a wonderful job of having everything we would need for our month long stay ready for us on arrival. We enjoy walking and this location is perfect for that. The property itself was so comfortable, I would highly recommend staying at this lovely home.
