This town was founded by and built by the Army in the 40's and now most of it is owned by the railroad. Driving there from Anchorage you must go through the Whittier tunnel. Cost is $13.00 per car and that gets you in and out. Or, you may choose to ride the Alaska Railroad there from Anchorage
