A bit of history:
Place Pey Berland is home to Saint-André Cathedral, its separate bell tower – known as the Tour Pey Berland – and the Palais Rohan, which now serves as the town hall. Formerly the archbishop’s palace until the French Revolution, the building went on to serve successively as the seat of the Revolutionary Tribunal, the prefecture, an imperial palace and a royal castle. Saint-André Cathedral is also a major witness to the history of France, and of Bordeaux in particular: it notably hosted the royal wedding of Louis VII and Eleanor of Aquitaine in 1137, and that of Anne of Austria and Louis XIII in 1615. The Pey Berland district is also known as the Hôtel de Ville district.
