TIPS
We recommend dedicating a day to visiting the beautiful towns around the lake. Como is the urban center of the area, but the lakeside towns are gems with stunning villas. To travel and walk around Lake Como, especially in the small villages, comfortable shoes are essential. There are many public fountains with drinkable water in the area, and the water is safe to drink unless otherwise indicated. Tap water is also drinkable. Bring your refillable bottle! If you\'re looking for a relatively easy hike in the area and still want to enjoy mountain views, the Greenway del Lago di Como is an easy-to-follow trail that doesn’t require much climbing. It connects the towns from Colonno to Griante. A bus from Como will take you to the starting point in Colonno. Look for traditional restaurants to taste local food, especially fish dishes from Lake Como. In Italy, many shops (especially small ones) and services close during midday, so plan your shopping accordingly. Lake Como is one of the deepest lakes in Europe and the deepest in Italy. Swimming and diving are prohibited in many areas and can be dangerous. For those who wish to get in the water, there are a few options. In the city of Como, there is an outdoor pool near Villa Olmo, but swimming in the lake is generally not recommended and often forbidden. There are beaches in other lakeside towns. The Lido of Bellagio and the pebble beach of San Giovanni are great spots for those wanting to explore the beautiful town of Bellagio, located at the junction of the lake’s two branches. Locals and visitors also love going to Nesso, where adventurous swimmers can dive into the lake from the ancient Roman bridge near the waterfall. Lake Como is located in a mountainous region. While the surrounding Prealps may not seem very high, the weather is still influenced by the nearby mountains, and temperatures can change quickly. Pay close attention to weather conditions during hikes and bring warm, waterproof clothing!
