Very nice unit with a great ocean view
The property sits at the end of a lane detached from the host’s home. The elevation is about 400’ above sea level in a remote area near the north shore. There is a small town within a 5 min drive. The unit has a nice large lanai with a view towards the ocean. The unit is well lived in with a nice kitchen, bath, bedroom and a small sitting area. The dining table is on the lanai. The host is very friendly and their day to day living does not interfere with the privacy of this rental unit. The unit itself could use some updates and a refresh, but it was comfortable. The king size bed is a nice feature, and although the pillow top cover helped, a new mattress would be a nice update. The evenings on the covered and partially enclosed lanai were quiet and very relaxing. The location is perhaps a bit more remote than we anticipated, but we enjoyed our stay. A couple of things the owners could address are; the oven door does not close properly so when we used it, the whole unit heats up, and the blinds are all in poor / worn shape and it is very hard to open (and close) the windows as is requested by the hosts when you cannot lift the blinds.

Magnificent Views!
The view of the vast Pacific Ocean is the gem of this property. Clean, classy and convenient. Honokaa is a short 2 mile drive and has everything you need. Tex’s malasadas are amazing!

Incredible ocean view from lanai!
Rachel is a very helpful host who respects your privacy. The lanai was spectacular - recommend buying an air mattress in Waimea and sleeping out on the lanai. Honokaa is a sweet town with some old Hawaiian buildings worth exploring.

Beautiful Retreat
Rachel’s guest home was in the perfect location for us. It is out in the country, with nothing obscuring your view of the ocean. You cannot reach the ocean from this location because you are high above it. But the views are outstanding, sun rise, moon rise and set, and stars. Home is very clean, well furnished and comfortable bed. Rachel was a great host; she provided good suggestions for nearby hiking and sightseeing and fresh fruit from her trees, but never intruded. Would definitely stay again.

beautiful property, beautiful view, beautiful visit
The unit is at the end of a quiet street one exit south of Honoka'a, off of Hwy 19. Nights are quiet with no light noise, no traffic noise. You do hear (and see) the neighboring cattle and horses. You do hear a chorus of birds; finches, morning doves. The view of the vast pacific is unencumbered. The 1 bed 1 bath unit has a large lanai with a large table with chairs and 2 lounge chairs. It's southern half is enclosed in sliding glass panels to prevent wind driven rain from interfering with ocean gazing or star gawking. It has a clean, well equipped kitchen. The bed is comfortable and the bedroom is generously sized. The bathroom is finished in tile and it is very nice. One caution- The shower/soaking bath combo has an aggressive step in and out requiring you step high. There is a sturdy well placed grab bar to help. This was a fantastic unit to which I'd happily return.

Excellent host
First off, loved the property. The view is amazing and the layout is nice. The breeze that runs through the windows keeps it cool. Rachel is an above and beyond host. She keeps the little things on hand that you would usually not think of when you’re on vacation. Stuff like coffee filters, dish soap, etc. She made us feel the true spirit of aloha and like we were part of her ohana. I would stay with her again anytime.

Peaceful - Great Views!
Very clean property - amazing views of the ocean (and sometimes cows). Geckos on the porch, lovely winds starting in mid morning, and relatively cool at night. The pool was very appealing, but we only went in it once (too busy doing other stuff). Rachel was very responsive, although we didn't end up needing anything. The unit had everything we needed - while we didn't cook we did eat in a couple of nights. The icemaker in the fridge was great, and there is a water filter container in the fridge as well. There are beach chairs, a cooler, and some other beach equipment. We may be a bit spoiled because we just got a new mattress at home, but the bed did have some peaks and valleys. There are multiple fans (we only used the ceiling fan) and it is extremely quiet! There is certainly lots to see in the area, with easy access to Waimea and north to Hawi. The Waip'o Valley lookout is also close, and there are several cool shops in Honoka'a. Rachel's place was a wonderful way to start our trip to the Big Island and we would certainly stay again.

Absolutely Delightful
This is a wonderfully quiet and private free standing unit (no shared walks with owner's house that is really out of sight behind the unit) tucked away about twenty minutes from the town of Waimea and about 5 minutes for the super cute historic town of Honokaa. Rachel provided everything we needed for our weeklong stay. Clean and cozy with amazing views of the ocean from a lanai that was designed to allow for fresh air and unobstructed views yet very protected from the wind (which was blowing quite a bit during our trip). It is on the wetter side of the island, but we still had plenty of sunshine. We didn't use the pool but it looked wonderful...it was a bit cold on our trip in February. I hope to be able to book a second visit sometime.

Great escape
We were needing to get away. This place was better than I hoped for. Literally at the end of a no traffic road. Quite comfortable. I loved the nights stargazing, listening to waves, frogs and sometimes whales. The private deck is such a bonus.

Gorgeous and secluded Honokaa/Paauhau getaway!
If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Kailua-Kona, this is an amazing property. Secluded, private, and quiet, the property is immaculate and the host Rachel is incredibly friendly and helpful. We went scuba diving almost every day (mostly shore dives on Puako bay) and grilled fresh fish every night on the lanai. The afternoon rainbows and evening starry skies from the lanai were amazing. Having the beautiful pool is a huge plus! Waimea is 15-20 minutes away, with many nice restaurants (one of our favorites is "The Fish and the Hog"). The small but close Malama Market in Honokaa has awesome produce and a pretty good selection of just about everything. There are also farmers markets in Honokaa and Waimea on Saturdays (some on other days). If you are planning a private getaway for some peace and quiet, this is a great choice. Honokaa is about one hour from the Kona airport, and an additional 15 minutes more to Kailua-Kona, so you should map out your adventures before booking and make sure you're ok with the drive times. For us, this end-of-the-road location with an sweeping ocean view is absolutely perfect!

Beautiful open view with privacy
Wonderful location close to the little town and farmer market, unobtrusive view, quiet and peaceful. Watching the cloud playing at the horizon day and night, shine or rain. Love the large lanai for dining, reading with gentle cool breeze. We even spotted a couple of wild pigs. Old Mamalahoa Hwy along the pasture connected to Mud Ln was a joyful find.

incredible getaway
We loved this property!! A truly wonderful place to stay - sitting on the lanai looking out at the ocean felt like we were at our own private spot at the edge of the world...yet at the same time it was easy to get to and convenient for adventures in other parts of the island. Add in Rachel being the most accommodating and communicative host ever, and I don't think I've stayed anywhere better! We got to experience sunny, beautiful weather and a windy, rainy storm during our stay - BOTH types were amazing to experience at this perfect guest house...can't wait to come back someday!

Beautiful place at the end of the road overlooking the ocean
This is a very lovely place to stay. We spent many hours on the beautiful lanai looking out over the ocean. It was very peaceful and a great place to rest. Lots of wildlife...birds, cows, chickens and geckos. Good kitchen and BBQ, spacious bedroom with comfortable bed and nice bathroom.

Loved staying in this place. A nice change of pace from Kona and Hilo. Kelopa State recreation area is nearby and has nice shaded hiking trails. Enjoyed the pool and the lovely views from the lanai which has glass in one corner to make it a nice place to sit even on a windy or rainy day.

We'll be back again for sure!
We are so glad that we got to stay at Rachel's harmonious home. Everything about the house was all we really needed with lots of thoughtfulness to make the visit so pleasant. We vacation on the Big Island at least 1x a year, but we have to add that this most recent visit in February was one of our favorites. We could spend hours on the lanai with those beautiful ocean views. The ocean breezes and open windows kept us at the perfect temperatures. We made use of the BBQ grill, beach chairs, and we were able to stream a few of our favorite shows on TV. We chuckled to ourselves how dark it was at night, and how amazing the stars were! Rachel even texted us one morning to let us know there were whales out front. How incredible! Honoka'a town is a quick drive away, Waimea is about a half hour away for more restaurant choices/market choices. Hilo was about 45 min-1 hour away, and Waipio was only about 15 min away. Mahalo Rachel for your warm hospitality!

It has everything that made the stay enjoyable all you need is grocery. Recommend you get that on the way to the property. The view was amazing! Great spot off the beaten path
Like others have said, the photos don't quite do this place justice. The location is really beautiful, kind of perched above the ocean, and it's near a very cute, small town with some cute shops and cafes but not touristy. We were in Hawaii for ten days, we stayed at this place the whole time and took day trips to a bunch of different places. The southern part of the Island feels a bit far away from this spot but everything else felt fairly doable. We also took two days off from driving all around the island to just relax at 'home' and I'm so glad we did. We swam in the pool and explored Hanokaa and both of those days were so peaceful and needed. It was great to have such a lovely home base to explore from.

Private and peaceful oasis
Loved our stay! This beautiful property is located in a lovely quiet area of the island away from the touristy hubbub of Kailua-Kona. In the morning, you wake to the gentle sounds of chickens crowing and cows mooing in the distance, no traffic sounds at all! We cooked dinner in most nights, grilling fish on the lanai BBQ. The view from the lanai is gorgeous and we loved watching the sun rise every morning and eating our meals outside. So peaceful! House was immaculate and stocked with everything we needed. The pool was a wonderful bonus! Rachel, the owner, responded immediately to our questions (we did not have many because everything was great). We're divers, and most of the Kohala coast dive sites we dove at were 30-40 minutes away. Waimea is 15 miles away and has restaurants and all the modern conveniences. If you're looking for relaxation and solitude in a place all your own, this is a lovely property with a lovely owner.

LOVE!!!
Rachel's ohana is in a little pocket that, at least for the week we were there Jul/Aug, had a super temperate climate with occasional showers, the perfect humidity level, and near constant trades. It was like a magical little microclimate that's a lot sunnier than only 500' elevation higher up in Honoka'a (5min away), with a stunning ocean- and partial-gulch view. If you're an open-window-weather person, this is the place for you, and the neighborhood was very quiet. We adored that we couldn't hear planes or traffic--the only aircraft were the occasional helicopters on their way to/from Waipio tours. There was a fair bit of cloudiness at night while we were there, so we weren't able to stargaze often, but when it was clear, it was amazing (though, we had a weird sleep schedule, as we stayed on mainland time, so I don't know how clear it was during normal-nighttime-awake hours). I find the location to be primo if you want to do things all over the island--you're 40min to Kohala beaches, 20min to Waipio, 45min to Hilo, so it's super central. You can faintly hear the crashing waves in the distance (some times are louder than others), the house was super clean, and the pictures don't begin to do the property justice. The bed (which I think is a CA king) was plenty comfy for both of us (even though we typically prefer different levels of softness). If you're really into cooking, you might find the kitchen lacking a few things, but it was perfectly adequate for our needs--and there's a dishwasher (score!! I feel like that's super hard to find unless you're renting a large, higher-end house,). The lanai is huge and has loungers, which we spent a LOT of time on and loved, while gazing out at ocean or simply having it in the background of what we were doing. We used the pool for a dip most days, which is fairly large and also has a full-on ocean view. Rachel was extremely kind, accommodating, and generous. She seemed to really want to make sure we had everything we could need and was just so lovely to chat with when we ran into her. We would absolutely stay here again in a heartbeat and am grateful that Rachel makes it available!

House is kinda nice and functional good views, just kind of feels like you camping in someone’s back yard. Owner is always here and never leaves ! We didn’t even swim in pool because her porch is right there . If your looking for something private this is not a good option also no smoking on property and your not allowed to have guest over at all even for dinner. The whole time I just felt like someone is breathing down my neck and didn’t like it!!

Aloha Rory, I am so glad that you enjoyed your stay at this property enough that you chose to rent it for an extra week. I know that you were displeased that I charged you the required Hawaii state taxes on your extra week stay and that I am firm on my No Smoking policy, although I did make allowances for the remainder of your stay. It was however, unfortunate to find out midway through your stay that you chose to completely disregard my No Smoking policy as well as toss parts of your cigarettes onto the driveway. I wish you well and hope in the future you choose a rental that accommodates smoking. Mahalo, Rachel

Just minutes from Waimea and Waipio, we enjoyed breakfast at Waimea coffee company and Grammas in Honokaa. The views at the place were breathtaking for dinner and the kitchen was well equipped. HEAVEN!
Words will never begin to describe our stay in this beautiful home. The view was absolutely breathtaking. Every morning we would wake up to two beautiful horses pasturing through the grass fields in the back yard while the morning sun beamed upon us. The sound of the wind blowing across the fields, and the sound of the ocean brought us so much peace and serenity. We even saw an adorable baby boar and it's mother running around in the fields. The night sky sparkled with clear and bright views of the stars. Rachel is such a beautiful host with such amazing energy. We are forever grateful and blessed to have found this home. When we return we will definitely be staying here again.

This is the stay you’re looking for!
If you are looking for peace, quiet and tranquility this is the place. At night you fall asleep to the sounds of frogs, the solitary but happy horse munching grass down below the lanai and the occasional waves crashing on the cliffs just a short distance away lulls you to sleep. The stars at night are amazing and really cause you to stop, slow down and take it all in. On the occasion if it is cloudy or raining, the Kona Coast is a short drive away. Or just stay at home and enjoy the warm rain all around you while protected by the spacious lanai. Perfect to snooze on. The accommodations themselves were just perfect. The bed was firm where it needed to be and just soft enough in the right places. The kitchen is adequately stocked so you don’t feel the pressure of having to go to a restaurant every time you want a bite to eat. We were able to prepare a lot of our own meals and food for the day right here. I especially loved the showerhead that is probably 7 feet from the floor. Being 6 1/2 feet tall this was a real treat. Water pressure and hot water were never an issue. The pool looked beautiful however we never took advantage of it as we were typically hiking, biking or at the beach. Rachel is the owner and is a wonderful host. She is genuinely happy to have you and is an excellent resource for local tips and places to explore. We were genuinely sad leaving the home and the island in general.

Didn't Want to Leave
This is one of the best vacation rentals we have ever stayed in. There is something about it, the recluse location, the warmth of the host and being in her space, or the amazing lanai that really allowed us to disconnect, be present, and truly relax. We hung out on the lanai everyday, saw all kinds of animals running through the yard just below us, view of the ocean during the day, spectacular star gazing at night, close to Waipio Valley and other hikes along the north side of the island, which are beautiful and unique. All in all, dreaming of a time when we can return.
