Craftsman Cottage Stay
Absolutely OUTSTANDING in all respects! The property is lovely in the cloud forest. The house is extremely clean and well maintained, especially for the environment. Kathryn was excellent and brought fresh eggs for us to enjoy. That being said; first night - Coqui Frogs were a bit hard to handle. Wife was ready to pull a "My Cousin Vinny", except we didn't have a hand gun. By the last night she was actually in love with the forest sounds and misses them at night. We truly hope we are blessed enough to visit Kathryn and Bill in the future and stay here again!

Wonderful forest retreat
This cottage was just want we wanted, a quiet retreat in a rainforest. You could hear birds in the trees all day and frogs at night. We loved hanging out on the covered deck which was nice when it was raining. The hosts had everything we needed, lists of gear for kids and the beach. We will definitely be back with our kid sometime. Hosts were super helpful when google maps gave us incorrect directions.

Absolutely prefect

It’s an amazing property, beautiful and quiet. The house is dotted with gorgeous local culture decor. Bill and Kathy are incredibly kind, responsive, and informative. They provide everything you need, from a full functioning kitchen and washer/dryer unit, to two bedrooms and a loft with extra pillows and blankets. Not recommended if you don’t like narrow, partly unpaved roads to get there. Also, it gets DARK at night, that’s the nature of the island, so be careful driving in and out. Overall, it was an absolutely amazing experience.

Best Stay in Kona
So many exceptional details…Cool elevation, quiet surroundings, comfortable and accessible house, and the complete kitchen. A photographer’s dream landscape! We recommend a visit to the nearby Cloud Forest Sanctuary for a 90-minute educational hike. Wonderful opportunities abound. We love the louse, the location, and the feel-at-home environment. Mahalo nui loa! ❤️

Just the best!
Spent 5 days here away from the fray of Kailua Kona, in this wonderful setting. House beautiful, wonderful hardwood everywhere, kitchen well stocked, all manner of beach equipment like chairs, towels, snorkeling stuff. Close to the wonderful Kona Cloud sanctuary, highly recommend doing one of their tours. Mountain thunder coffee also close, interesting short tour. Kathryn and Bill great. Can’t recommend highly enough. Will definitely be back!

Frogs and Flowers
The stay here was awesome. The cabin was actually nicer than the photos represent. Very clean and tidy. The owners are nearby but the the vegetation is so thick you wouldn’t know it. Beautiful surroundings! It is worth noting that your gps will get you almost there. Make sure you have the owners phone number to guide you in. Expect rain almost every day but you are typically 10 minutes away from clear skies and 15 to 20 degrees warmer. Nice place I would recommend.

Rainforest retreat
Fly into Kona and glance up at the mountain - you'll be about halfway up there, shortly. The cottage is nicely secluded and quite private. The hosts could not have been nicer, and you'll likely meet their chickens, sweet dog, and "patrol" cat. The cat came by every day to see what we were up to - he's friendly but indifferent - you know: a cat! Everything on the VRBO site was according to Hoyle, no surprises. Listening to the frogs at night was just amazing. We are just two adults but the place can accommodate a family or even two couples easily. Would stay there again, and recommend to anyone.

Not clean and cluttered
The driveway to the Cabin is just lovely. The cabin looks good. A beautiful place. The cabin is very nice built. Once we tried to unpack the problems started. No place to put your clothes in the master bedroom so we lived out of our suitcases. There is a closet, it had stuff including a someone's swimsuit in it. Every flat surface had knickknacks on them so again no real place to unpack. The bedding in the master was threadbare. Towels were good. The kitchen counter was full except one small cutting board to prepare food. The stove hood was greasy. As was the top of the fridge. We cleaned them both. Lots of coffee cups but only a few mismatched drinking glasses. The skylight was mostly covered in green and the inside had cobwebs. We left after only 2 nights because it was just uncomfortable. We owe a Vacation home that we rent out. What I've leaned is less is more (except in kitchen plates, flatware, utensils and towels. Over decorating is just too much. Give your guest room to spread out. Hire a cleaning company to do the deep cleaning if you don't want to do it.

Exactly what we were looking for!
This property is located in the rain forest close to Kona town. Beautiful, lush forest so peaceful and quiet. Bill & Kathy were great hosts! On our last morning, Kathy brought down a Jackson Chameleon for our 11 year old grandson to see. He was crossing the driveway! We watched him change colors as he slowly disappeared in the lush gardens. Definitely coming back!

Rainforest oasis
Husband and I checked in for our 10 day stay at this property. The host provided us a few light breakfast items as well as some very appreciated coffee as we got in late at night. The grounds of the house are simply amazing, lush and vibrant. The frogs, crickets and birds provide a peaceful ambiance. The soaker tub is more enjoyable then one would think as it gets quiet cool in the evenings up on the mountain. The flowers and trees on the grounds were incredible and diverse!! So many beautiful plants I have never seen in person before! Smell them ALL. You can thank me later. The home is SPACIOUS, mind you it was just the two of us this trip. We stayed in the room with the king sized bed, this is your warning to use a night light as the desk and bed are rather close together and my thighs took a serious beating haha. The home offered the amenities we were looking for- quiet, off the beaten path, peaceful, tropical. And we definitely enjoyed our time there. The hosts were pleasant to speak with (they live on the property but not in view of the property). My only thing- it was fairly dusty….. (ceiling fans, loft bed, bugs in window ledges, cobwebs) to which I wouldn’t complain about except you do pay a $150 cleaning fee. Perhaps it’s me being overly OCD just something I took notice of. All in all, we enjoyed the home and the grounds. And would definitely consider another stay at this cottage in paradise!

Great location away from commotion of city.
Our family loved the house. We enjoyed the cool nights listening to nature as we fell asleep. Kids loved the outdoor soaking tub and "playing" with owner's chickens. Location was perfect with just a short drive to get into town but far enough away to feel like the middle of nowhere. Kathryn and Bill were great hosts and even brought us fresh fruit during our stay.

Idylle im Regenwald
Es ist unglaublich, nur ein paar Fahrminuten von den heißen Stränden entfernt, befindet sich dieses Haus in den Bergen mitten im Regenwald mit hohen Farnen, Orchideen usw. Das Haus und die Location sind unglaublich und absolut empfehlenswert! Es ist hier ein paar Grad kühler und feuchter, also Pulli nicht vergessen einzupacken.

Perfect jungle unwind
Very friendly and responsive hosts- lovely little house with cozy accommodations. There was a bit of a cold spell and at night about 10 degrees colder than down in Kailua so we actually did use the wood burning stove occasionally at night. Kid enjoyed the outdoor bathtub and now baths back at home require playing coqui frog sound effects… Have already recommended the house to other friends, and would definitely return.

Awesome! Needs new king bed, a bit uneven due to wear but tolerable and a few new pots and pans. Teflon is toxic when coming off into your food. If you want a hot bath, boil water the heater isn’t big enough for the tub. Mahalo Stev and Jaz.

Perfect jungle retreat
This cottage is up the kona Kailua mountain about 15 minutes. At this elevation there is thick rainforest. This is a nice change from the often dry low lands. It is beautiful waking up in the forest and listening to the birds each day. It’s a big island and everything requires driving, but this place is relatively central to all of the nice beaches on the west side. The cottage itself is nice and well appointed. It’s easy to be comfortable here. The fireplace is a nice touch for the evenings. The owners are super helpful and professional. You can’t go wrong with this vacation rental!

Secluded rain forest home
Located about 2,000 feet above the sea, this home is in a beautiful and serene location. If you are looking for privacy and a cool respite from sea level temperatures it is ideal. Beautiful craftsmanship (the owner is a contractor), an outdoor tube to compliment the large indoor shower and island themed decor are a few of the benefits this property offers. One suggestion to the owners: a couple of real wine glasses would be a nice addition (but non of the standard beverage glasses leaked so we managed!).

Comfortable Cottage
A great experience from beginning to end. The owners were very helpful, responsive and communicative throughout. I had a group of five and had no problems accommodating everyone. The kitchen had everything we needed. This is our first VRBO and it worked out well. The directions to the house was very helpful. But best to checkin during daylight because navigating can be a little tricky at night.

We really appreciated the uphill cool of this cute place. Being up this high (maybe 2000 feet?) meant the nights were wonderful, especially after a day at the beach. No AC needed! And yet still close enough to airport, Costco and Kona beaches... The cottage was well appointed, had a very usable kitchen with spices and condiments and there were beach stuff and coolers for use. We were only there for the weekend so didn't get to take advantage of the rentals available (kayak and SUP, I believe) through the owners. Beds were comfy and there was even a friendly cat who joined us now and then. I highly recommend this lovely spot in the jungle.

Secluded, But a Long Drive to Everything
The property was nice and seemed well cared for and was Very secluded & private and a long drive to get anywhere. So, if we went to the beach and got hot, salty and sandy, we had a long drive to get cleaned up and a long drive back into town to be able to go out to a nice dinner. If you plan on hanging out at the cabin and not seeing the island, this wouldn't be an issue, but we wanted to explore and see the sites. It was not as cool as we had hoped it would be. After a long hot day at the beach, I would have enjoyed some air conditioning. As it was, we purchased a fan, because the overhead fans just didn't do the job. By morning, it felt cool, but to be able to sleep, we needed it to be cooler. Also, it was odd that there was only one hand towel for an entire weeks use, and one bath towel per person and not one wash cloth. We requested some, and received them, but it seemed strange that we had to ask for such a basic necessity. Also, there weren't enough dishes. We only had 4 plates, so we never had enough for a dishwasher full and ended up having to wash by hand. I'm not sure what would happen if there were more than two people staying here, because it looks like it sleeps 6 people. The outdoor bathtub was nice, but be prepared with bug spray, because they come out pretty thick at night. Daytime is a little better. Overall, it was nice, but I wouldn't stay here again.

THE GREAT ESCAPE
What a wonderful place to get away from the crush of tourists and sweltering heat in Kona. We loved returning to this oasis of quiet and cool after the day's activities. The cottage is surrounded by dense vegetation--very private. Everything we needed for our stay was provided except food of course. Having said that, we loved the bananas the owner brought to us--apple bananas--delicious! She was quick to respond to queries while at the same time respecting our privacy. We felt right at home and hated leaving at the end of our stay. Ollie the cat was a bonus! How nice to have a fur person to welcome us/and we him each day. We highly recommend the cottage for any length of stay.

Great property with GREAT Hawaiian vibe!!
NO complaints here. This is a great property with GREAT Hawaiian vibe. Neat and clean. One small mechanical glitch was quickly attended to by the owners that live close by. (Thank you!). Our only suggestion would be one more chair in the dining area and another chair on the lanai. There were only two at both locations and there were 3 of us. Plans are to return to the Big Island next year and will definitely stay here again!!

Fantastic place to stay near Kona!
This is a great little property set higher in the hills where it is actually cool enough to sleep. The cottage is amazing with open beam cedar ceilings and lovely tile. This cottage was built with love. Very quiet and secure. Absolutely a must if you are looking for a place to stay on the Kona side of the island.

Beautifully hand crafted home in the jungle with lots of privacy and star gazing. The house had all the required amenities plus beach supplies. I plan to recommend this house to all of my friends who come to the big island. The cat Ollie makes sure everyone is awake around coffee time than heads off agin, he’s legit. Quality experience overall.

A truly HAWAIIAN experience for the traveler that wants to see the REAL Hawaii.
If you’re looking to be near all of the tourists and tee shirt shops and demand room service, then skip this place. If you want to experience what it’s like to live like a true kama’aina, your own house, your own space, away from it all, cook fresh seafood and Big Island steaks in your own corner of paradise, see the stars at night, then this is truly the ultimate experience. Beautiful house, lush tropical forest, comfortable and tasteful furnishings, well appointed kitchen, grill, outdoor bathtub, wildlife, flowers, cool nights, Ollie the cat, and wonderful hosts in Bill and Kathryn. We will absolutely be back. We stayed there for 8 days. We wouldn’t ever consider staying in the town of Kailua-Kona. This place is full of ALOHA!

Beautiful! Quiet and cool.
We’ve always stayed on the beach, so this was a different experience for us. It was quiet and cool and away from the crowds and traffic. It is off the beaten path, but we were in town or out exploring every day anyway, so we didn’t find it inconvenient. We enjoyed sweet Ollie’s (the cat) visits every morning!

Second Visit Even Better!
We stayed here a couple of years ago and coming back this September was wonderful. This cabin is so well crafted we could spend the whole vacation just admiring the woodwork; all custom built by the owners. The beach is not too far, and it is such a relief to come back up into the cool and lush mountain cloud forest after being in the heat a few thousand feet below. It is very private, but the owners, Bill and Kathy, are nearby. There are jungle trails and coffee plantations within walking distance. This time we saw the native ʻio (Hawaiian hawk) over the cabin on several occasions. Thanks Bill and Kathy for the delicious home grown white pineapple and your warm hospitality. Beautiful hidden paradise
The photos don't do this place justice. It's perfect in so many ways - beautiful wood construction, wonderful shower, comfortable beds and furniture to lounge on, functional kitchen including dishwasher and laundry! Outside is a lush, unbelievably private paradise that is in direct contrast to the relatively dry coastal areas on the Kona side. The outdoor living space is gorgeous with well maintained landscaping giving way to a tropical rain forest. Even though it's only 15 minutes to town (and the airport), the cottage feels isolated and unbelievably private. It was a welcome relief to come "home" to cooler temperatures, and moist tropical air after beach days. We also enjoyed the beach chairs and boogie boards. If you're looking for a very reasonably priced, beautiful rental look no further. We will return!

Beautiful home in the cloud forest
This lovely home is up the moutain 3,000 ft. It is a very different world from down at the water. It is a quiet respite and we enjoyed staying there. The hosts are resposive, hospitable and flexible. If you would like a different experience in Hawaii this is it!

Very private
We were looking for a quiet, secluded place to enjoy a relaxing family vacation and we found it! The cottage was so beautiful and comfortable. The owners made us feel right at home and were very friendly and helpful. We were completely surrounded by the forest and had complete privacy. The outdoor bathtub got a lot of use! The indoor shower was huge, the beds were comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed to prepare our meals. It got a little chilly a couple of nights, so the wood stove came in handy to get the chill out of the air in the morning.The beaches and Kona were only a 15 or 20 minute drive away, so we really felt we had the best of both worlds. We enjoyed a hike through the forest on a nearby trail one day and a walk to the nearby coffee planation for some free samples. We will definitely be back!

If you want an authentic Hawaiian experience and not a fake resort experience, this is for you.
Located almost 3,000 feet up the slopes of the Hualalai volcano, in a lush rain forest about a 25 minute drive from downtown Kailua-Kona, the cottage is a little out-of-the-way. But that's what makes it so special. If you're prepared for a little rain and temperatures about 15 degrees cooler than along the coast, you will love this secluded cottage.
