Just over Tuscany's southern border, in Lazio, I Gigli del Belvedere is set on a hilltop close to the pretty medieval town of Montefiascone and commands extensive views over nearby Bolsena lake to a line of blue hills on its far side. One of a small group of villas that can happily absorb parties of up to 20 people, it does so particularly flexibly - there are ten bedrooms split over four separate apartments.

Each apartment has a private terrace, furnished with tables and chairs for al-fresco dining, but the largest of these, on the ground floor, has ample room for your whole party to eat together. The generous terrace to the side of the private pool, just beneath the villa, is sure to be a favourite gathering place for everyone (and kids of all ages will love the Jacuzzi section). But, come the end of the day, we think you'll head to the furnished terrace on the roof of the villa for your sundowner. And when you wish to get out and about, nearby Viterbo and Orvieto, both with fascinating histories, make great day trips.
