One of the nicest small hotels I've stayed in. It's all about the atmosphere for me. Being a 19th century building, and retaining original features, it's not coordinated and modern. Skirting boards don't match and parts are a little quirky. But I like that; it feels a home from home. That said, the decor is fresh and contemporary; clean and tidy.
The Avenue is a guest house, not a hotel. It excels as a guest house; We couldn't have asked for more. The owners are lovely and go out of their way to accommodate any reasonable requests. It somehow manages to be laid back and efficient at the same time, which is a neat trick.
Location-wise, it's a short walk to the esplanade and close to a few take-away food places (avoid the Chinese one).
Breakfast was excellent, and vegetarian and vegan diets are well catered for. Parking can be a little cramped, but for the Isle of Wight this us hardly unusual.
We were staying on a cycling holiday, and it's an ideal base - close to the Red Squirrel linking Sandown, Newport and Cowes.
The strategy for coping with the COIVD19 situation, in full swing when we visited, was exemplary.
