The Deeds Carillon illuminated for the holidays. An awesome spectacle and an awesomely short-lived road side attraction! The Deeds Carillon, the largest carillon in Ohio had been transformed into the shape of a holiday tree towering 200 feet in the air and glowing with 20,000 white lights. The plan was for the Carillon Tree of Light to be turned on nightly through New Year’s Day and be accompanied by the bells playing a medley of holiday classics on the hour. I went on Sunday night and stood in wonderment of the melodic bells and the strands of light enhancing the already majestic silhouette of the carillon. Overnight, wind gusts in excess of 40 or even 50 miles per hour damaged many of the strands of light. By morning, the damage was such that the display was beyond repair and will now be taken down for the year. Quite a whirlwind tale for the inaugural lighting of the the Deeds Carillon.

Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum in Dayton, Ohio, is one of the oldest "garden" cemeteries in the United States. Incorporated in 1842, the cemetery began with 40 acres southeast of Dayton and has been enlarged to its present size of 200 acres.

Carillon Historical Park is named for the 151-foot-tall Deeds Carillon. A carillon is a musical instrument that is typically housed in the belfry of a church or municipal building. The instrument consists of at least 23 cast bronze, cup-shaped bells. The tower was built in 1942 to commemorate the Deeds family. When the tower was built, each of 23 bells was inscribed with the name of a family member, with the “silent” bells bearing the names of deceased family members and ringing bells cast with the names of family members then living. Today, with 57 bells, the carillon is Ohio’s largest. I'm not sure how much competition there is in that category. The National Park Service listed the Deeds Carillon on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. The carillon is the heaviest musical instrument.
