Mount Rogers National Recreation Area

Pictured here is a segment of the Virginia Creeper Trail, a 34.3-mile rail-trail stretching from Abingdon, Virginia, to Whitetop, Virginia. According to locals, it has been described as the best mountain bike trail in the east. This trail is open to bikers, hikers, and horseback riders year-round. Appalachia is known for its abundance of opportunities to get outside and actively enjoy its beauty; the Virginia Creeper Trail is just one relatively popular example of this. #appalachianechoes

This image of a mural was taken in downtown Damascus, VA. It depicts a compass rose with the Appalachian Trail logo in the center with words, in a very large font, that read “Trail Town USA. Damascus prides itself for being a crossroads of more than six trails and being a gateway to the Mount Rogers Recreation Area. There is a festival that takes place in spring in this town called Trail Days where various outdoor activities take place. The Appalachian mountains is a place where thousands of hiking trails are located, and hiking is a common activity done by residents with in these mountains, so having an entire town dedicated to the activity is almost to be expected. #appalachianechoes
