Dutchman's Breeches (Dicentra cucullaria) named after its white flower's resemblance to old fashion pants. Because of its flower morphology, bumblebees are the only insect with mouth parts long enough that can reach the nectar. Other insects have developed a cheat method and chew a hole through part of the blossom. Dutchman's breeches is one of many plants whose seeds are spread by ants, a process called myrmecochory. The ants take the seeds to their nest, where they eat the seed's fleshy covering, and put the seeds in their nest debris, where they are protected until they germinate. They also get the added bonus of growing in a medium made richer by the ant nest debris. The location was wonderful. Other people reside in the house but they were quiet. The only concern is the coffee maker (Kuerig) needed to be washed out.

The Hartman Rock Garden is most definitely a unique roadside attraction. What started in 1932 by Ben Hartman as a concrete fishing pond, expanded into an entire mini world using thousands of stones, a myriad of plants, handmade figurines and one hell of an imagination. After Ben's passing in 1944, his widow, Mary took over his labor of love until her passing in 1997. The garden began to succumb to neglect but was renovated in 2009 and is now open and free for visitors every day.
