Great Get Away

Perfect getaway
We have visited this cabin 3 times in the past year and won’t stay anywhere else. The property is perfect in our opinion and the owner is quick to resolve any issues. We have nothing but good things to say about this cabin and look forward to our upcoming trip in June.

What more can I say....
Best place ever!! We have been visiting for about a decade. I wish we could get the time to go more often. I have traveled a bunch with my work, but as soon as you walk in this place is home... even if it is for only a few days. I love that I can take my fur baby, when we first started renting I did not have one and tried to get them to throw in a dog for the stay..LOL. Eurus loves coming with us and barking at new critters. I hope we can make a return visit this spring/summer, but my favorite time will always be winter. Make sure you go when there is no moon, the stars are amazing, reminds me of skys out west.

Perfect Rental
This was our third stay at Fernweh, by request of our son. Our family enjoys the fire pit, steps down to the river, hot tub & remote location. It is a very private, quiet place. The house is always so clean. Rob is a fantastic host. It was fun to see a few updates since we last stayed, but appreciate that the cabin has always felt so cozy and accommodating for our family. We highly recommend renting it!

Third Stay at Fernweh
My wife and I, along with our dog Milo love staying at this cabin. This time it was for our post-Holiday season winddown after a wonderfully busy season with family and friends. The cabin, furnishings, fireplace and setting are so enjoyable. Morning and afternoon walks with Milo and a trip down to the mountain stream are followed by a warm beverage and fireplace. Fernweh is our "go-to-place" in the mountains.

Awesome Mountain Cabin near Mentone
Fernweh is an amazing spot for a quick couple’s get away. It is remotely located and very private. You can hear the river tumbling over the rocks below from the screened in porch. The fireplaces are awesome as well. Our stay was very comfortable, and everything we needed was available. Robert was easy to communicate with and ensured our stay was great. Highly recommend this cabin if you are looking for a mountain retreat in North Alabama!

Getaway in the mountains of Alabama
It was a great stay! We had some issues getting in because we hadn't clicked on the right link in the info email to get the door code and there's no signal at the cabin and it was dark and cold (we came from FL!), but we didn't panic, we just jumped back in the car and drove out just past the barcode gate and found a signal and got the code! Added to the adventure! The cabin is beautiful and did have most everything I needed to cook Thanksgiving dinner! I brought a couple of my own casserole dishes just in case. Hottub was great! Got hot, bubbles worked, plenty of room! Coffee on the porch at sunrise - priceless! The river is beautiful, but please be extra extra careful on the steps as it was really slick after a recent rain. We took advantage of True Adventure Sports in Ft. Payne and did a day of rappelling and rock climbing-perhaps more appropriate for my teenage boys than us oldies, but it was still fun and beautiful to spend the day outside! Who know there were sheer rock cliffs in Alabama?? Would definitely stay here again, if we were in the area!

Great Trip
Wonderful trip. Property just as described. The location is pretty remote but what we wanted. Dish TV service a little spotty but given the location not surprising. Would definitely come back.

Mountain retreat
Relaxing restful retreat in beautiful restored log cabin. A little bit of a trek to get there. The cabin is very remote but was so worth it once I arrived. Equipped with everything. Super cozy and comfortable! Just overall a very lovely stay and experience.

Summer vacation
The property met all of our expectations. If you are looking for seclusion this is the place to go. Not far from DeSoto Falls and DeSoto state park. The river runs right behind the cabin and there are stairs that lead directly to it. The cabin was fully stocked with everything we needed and we couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay. The master bed was the most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept on and the master bath was nothing short of amazing. We will definitely be returning in the fall this year.

Just what we needed!
5 ladies- weekend getaway to see the falls! This cabin is wonderful. Owners communication is quick. Beds sleep comfortably. Very quiet and quaint. Any and everything you could need is in the cabin. We loved sitting on the back porch and listening to the river below. The walk down to the stream is EXTREMELY slippery no matter your shoe type. Including the railing. Be careful. Other than that. Highly recommend and will definitely stay again when in the area!

Overall our stay was great. Plenty of peace and quiet in a lovely cabin at a secluded location. Getting there was an adventure in navigation. We got to see just how out of shape we were with the return trek from the river (so many steps!), but very worth it. Seabolt's Street Tacos and Wildflower Cafe...Yummy! We grew fond of Charlie the chicken snake who likes to hang out on the roof of front porch. Great place!

Fernweh May 21-27 2023
Nestled at the end of a long and winding wooded road perfect for early morning and late afternoon walks with our chocolate lab, this home has everything that one might ask for in a vacation rental. Immaculately clean with care and attention to detail everywhere with every modern convenience that all actually work as promised, it is private and secluded but offers easy access to Mentone and surrounding areas. The stairs leading down to the river are magical unto themselves. Much thought went into the planning of this peaceful retreat and if it were possible, my wife and I would give our visit and its owner/host: 10 Stars.

The best getaway!
We had never been to Mentone, but this trip won't be our last! The town is adorable. We had a rainy weekend, so our outdoor plans got postponed, but the cabin is so wonderful. Private and eqipped with everything you need. Bed was much more comfortable than most other rentals we've stayed in. We fell in love with the area, food, and this cabin. We had somw trouble with the pin for directions, but the owner answered right away and helped us find our way. It was such a wonderful, slow weekend for us and we can't wait to come back. Outstanding experience all the way around.

a wonderful time
everything was perfect, even the days we had rain. the beds were very comfortable, sitting outside on the deck listening to the water below and the bird songs just melted away the stress. i love nature and being surrounded with all the trees and the scents of outside was lovely. thank you so much for the stunning cabin. p. s. please forgive the over sight....i forgot to take out the trash when we left. i was trying make sure everything was closed properly. will not happen again. again, thank you, thank you

Amazing!!
I stayed with my husband and our fur babies and this place was amazing!! Everything was wonderful. Going to begin staying every year. The bed downstairs was extremely comfortable compared to other cabins we have stayed in. Very peaceful. We sat in the hottub and listened to the river flow below.

Slice of heaven
This place is as close to perfect as you can get! We came with our 12 and 15 year olds and my parents, and every one of us loved it! We saw 3 vehicles drive by, in a week. The property is AMAZING!! Loved the beauty of the river, and sitting around the fire pit under the stars, listening to the rushing water. The cabin has everything you need, and we loved the details of the sinks, light fixtures, big tub and shower. The fireplaces and hot tub added to the relaxing vibes. We spent hours exploring the surrounding area, it is a beautiful area!! Being able to take our fur baby made it perfect! Highly recommend!

At the cabin, AT@T has generally poor service; however, Verizon is decent in most areas of Mentone. Glad you enjoyed it and hope you return!

Greatest cabin ever!
We spent a few nights here with our kids during spring break. Lookout Mountain is one of our favorite places to vacation and this cabin did not disappoint. From the beautiful stream to the picturesque cabin, our stay was perfect! We didn’t want to leave and will certainly return!

Fantastic Experience. First Time User
I totally agree with this host being premier. The host has thought of every detail in outfitting the cabin. Every possible furnishing or offering that a renter might be expecting has been thought of and provided. Owner has multiple properties and I am sure all are just as over the top nice. The rental experience from start to finish was flawless. This unit is secluded and the units in the area are 200+ yards away. No human noises....no traffic....perfect!!

The Perfect Getaway

Our Anniversary
This is the most beautiful cabin that we have ever started in. Very clean and every little touch to the cabin is absolutely gorgeous. The river is beautiful and the only issue we had was the steps down to the river. Most of us are older and not in good enough shape to go up and down the stairs. Detsoto State Park and the waterfall/dam is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. We loved Wildflower Cafe and all the waterfalls and the little shops in Mentone and Fort Payne. We highly recommend this cabin and all the cabins Mr. Shaffer owns. We had the best time of our lives!
