Sunrise and full moon from the Painted Hills overlook. Most iconic shots of the Painted Hills are 180 degrees from this view. I always encourage you to look 360 degrees and plan accordingly.
The Painted Hills is one of the three units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, located in Wheeler County, Oregon and is one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon. This is truly a sight everyone should see, millions of years of history revealed in the layers of mountains of earth, one color at a time.

There is no overnight camping at the Painted Hills. so plan accordingly for morning or evening shots. Morning coffee A' La Tail-Gate' is permitted and a beautiful ranger station with picnic benches at the entrance makes a perfect lunch spot.

Loved this placed. We saw deer, cows, turkey, geese, stars, and beautiful cloud formations just from the back deck. The interior is very comfortable and spotlessly clean. Our family had a great time and we'd love to return.
