It was so dirty there that I had trouble breathing and it effected my sleep and I was so tired during my stay that I couldn't help but laugh. The maids did nothing and that made everything even more fun, I laughed and I laugh now when I think about it. Never again will I return there, haha! The smell in the kitchen was terrible, they used those sprays that sprayed every once in awhile that you can find in some toilets, it didn't go well with the smell of all the cooking that was going on. The selling fan was so filthy that I was hoping no one would ever think of turning it on cos then the dirt would fly around and land in your food.

Det finns möss här! En morgon smög en mus ut genom springan under dörren. Lite äckligt. I teorin kostar det 10 USD att ha ditt bagage efter kl 17.00 vid utcheckning, men jag behövde inte betala. Det finns bättre vandrarhem än detta i San Fransisco

I had a very good experience at The European Hostel and would like to appreciate both the front desk and the day and night cleaning staff. They work hard every day to keep the place as clean and comfortable as possible for all guests. I’ve seen some reviews saying the hostel is “smelly” or “dirty.” Yes, sometimes you might notice this—but it’s important to understand why. This is an economical shared hostel, and you’re sharing a room with 4 or 6 other people. Many guests are travelers or people working from out of state, and sometimes they don’t have the time to do laundry or organize their belongings until their days off. The front desk manager reminds them multiple times to keep things tidy, but he can’t force them if they truly don’t have the time—he respects their situation. At the end of the day, you’re paying around $25 per night, so you can’t expect 5-star hotel facilities. What you can expect is a safe, budget-friendly place to stay, with a management team that works hard to accommodate everyone and make the best of a shared living environment. If you’re looking for a low-cost option in San Francisco with a team that genuinely cares for its guests, The European Hostel is a solid choice.

My stay at The European Hostel was an excellent experience, and I want to especially recognize the amazing staff and front desk service. The facilities are well-maintained, the beds are comfortable, and the common areas are welcoming with a great atmosphere. One thing that really stood out to me was seeing the front desk manager, Nick, personally taking care of the property. If he notices something doesn’t look clean or comfortable, he doesn’t wait for someone else—he will sweep, mop, and tidy up the rooms and kitchen himself. His goal is always to make sure every guest feels good energy and a positive vibe during their stay. Nick is always ready to assist guests with a smile, no matter how busy things get. Unfortunately, I also witnessed times when some guests disrespected him or even threatened him, simply because they didn’t want to follow the house rules. These are rules that keep a shared space clean, safe, and enjoyable for everyone. Sometimes people also leave bad reviews without realizing that they booked a shared facility with specific policies they agreed to before making a reservation. It’s important to understand how much effort and hard work Nick puts in every single day. He treats the hostel like his own home and works tirelessly to keep it safe and comfortable for all. I truly appreciated the way he handled situations fairly when some guests didn’t follow house rules, always making sure the environment stayed clean, safe, and comfortable for everyone. The rest of the staff were also friendly and kept the common areas tidy, creating a warm and positive atmosphere. The beds were surprisingly comfortable, with fresh linens provided, and I had no trouble getting a good night’s sleep. The kitchen was equipped with everything needed for cooking your own meals, which is a great bonus for travelers who prefer homemade food. He is not only professional but also genuinely cares about the comfort and safety of every guest. Unfortunately, a few guests left the kitchen messy, which gave others a chance to write negative reviews. But the truth is, these situations happen because of a few people who disregard shared space etiquette, not because of poor management. Nick always steps in to enforce the rules in a fair and respectful way, ensuring the hostel stays clean and welcoming for everyone. Some people might speak negatively about him without understanding the bigger picture. But in reality, he often goes above and beyond—sometimes even outside of his job responsibilities—to make guests feel at home. I didn’t know much about San Francisco when I booked this place, and I wasn’t aware that it is in an area called “the Tenderloin”, which is known to be one of the rougher areas. That being said, I had very little worry and no issues while I was there. This place was pretty much what I expected when I booked it; just a place for me to sleep. I booked a twin room to myself as I was over the age of 30 and it was all I needed. But know that the room is literally a twin bunk bud and that’s it. I would recommend a desk or a nightstand or something in there in the future. Would be nice, but I’m not complaining. My sheets were clean and I was comfortable, and that is all that matters. Two recommendations I would make, other than a nightstand or something in the room, is a better cleaning in the shared bathrooms. I can tell they were serviced morning and night, but it would be beneficial to clean out the inside of the showers. They were pretty disgusting and stayed pretty gross the whole time I was there. Lastly, I think it would also be beneficial to vacuum the steps and steam clean them. They smell pretty bad. Front desk employees were easy and friendly, and I greatly appreciate that. Kitchen had all I needed. Overall, again, all I needed an expected. But a few considerations for the future would potentially give them a higher score, at least in my mind.
