Om boendet

Cozy houseboat studio in the Old Town

  • Hi! My name is Casper. I’m 46 years old and have been living on and enjoying my houseboat for 9 years now. Over the past few years, I’ve spent a lot of time and effort renovating the boat, and for the last two years, I’ve been hosting guests from all over the world, giving them a taste of the “Amsterdam houseboat lifestyle.”

Since I’m new here on VRBO, there aren’t that many reviews yet. I wish I could share the incredibly positive feedback I’ve received on other websites, but unfortunately that’s not possible.

The boat is an old cargo boat from 1907 that was renovated a few years ago into a modern style. The original wooden roof elements from its early days were preserved during the renovation. Once you step aboard, you’ll notice that many nautical details—which give the space a very cool and rustic ambiance—are still visible. The portholes also add to the “ship experience” we offer. Although I live on the same boat, you’ll hardly notice I’m there. The space is very well insulated, and you’ll have all the privacy you want. At the front of the ship, you’ll find a lovely terrace where you can sit and enjoy the view of our harbor. There are many restaurants just a few minutes’ walk away. Of course, I’ll share my personal favorites with you. Furthermore, there are plenty of bars just around the corner.

The boat is located in the Oosterdok, which used to be Amsterdam’s old harbor before Central Station and the railways were built around the 1880s. The Oosterdok island is now a high-rise construction site, and our little boat village is actually situated between the oldest part of Amsterdam and the modern island with its expensive hotels and clubs. All other parts of town are very easy to reach on foot, by public transportation, and, of course, by bike. There’s a bike rental shop just around the corner. Note that the boat is fully equipped with central heating, so you’re guaranteed to stay comfortably warm all year round. Your apartment has a private entrance, and you don’t have to share anything with anyone.

Great Location

Studio unit on the house boat was clean and well presented. It was cosy with 3 adults in it, more suitable for a couple. Location made up for it, easy walk to central station and main attractions. We enjoyed our stay here.

Compact but central

Compact but ok for three of us - steep stairs if you have issues there. Galley (the correct term as it is a boat!) is moderately equipped- good fridge/freezer. We just enjoyed flaking out at the end of a day of lots of walking. No TV if that is your thing. A great place to stay for first visit to this city. Host very good with communication.

Exploring Amsterdam

The location is this is great if you are planning on using public transportation. It is a very easy walk to Central Station for the train to the airport, trams to museums, or just a walk to Chinatown and many local places to eat. Casper had coffee and tea ready for our use as well as an equipped kitchen which allowed us to make breakfast each morning before heading out. The pictures are very accurate of what you are renting!

What you see is what you get and nothing else

Casper is attentive and helpful. Boat is in a central location. The accommodation is one room with a bathroom. Only very basic amenities, coffee and toilet paper, no soap or shampoo or milk. I would not want to stay here in Summer as there’s no outdoor area to relax. The room has portals but absolutely nothing to view. The heat was good. I think we overpaid for what we got.

It’s a sufficient place to stay, a good location, and the owner is lovely, but you have to climb up and down stairs that are almost like a ladder to get to your room and there is NO view whatsoever. It’s a barge, not really a houseboat. We are older, and wouldn’t have rented if we had known you couldn’t see out and ladder climbing was involved!

Great location, cool experience

Casper is a helpful host/owner. He had a great list of recommendations and showed us around the property when we arrived. The studio was nice and a great location to the train station. With a Vrbo, I expect to rent the whole place, just be aware that you’ll have a neighbor that you share a front door with and that the owner has an adjoining door they stays locked. I never felt unsafe but didn’t feel like this was spelled out on the description. The original listing mentioned a hot tub twice, when I mentioned it he said he didn’t realize that was in the description and quickly updated it. It was a warm weekend, and don’t get great cross breeze, but there were fans available. Pictures are accurate, location is good, owner is helpful, just make sure you’re reading reviews.

BUDGET ACCOMMODATION AT LUXURY PRICE. CONS Dirty - Mouldy bathroom tiles, cobwebs on ceiling, dirt splashes behind bin, dirty shelving, Disrepair - rusty portholes, detritus/twigs on sky light, bathroom door unsecured, wardrobe sliding doors dont slide, wardrobe is crooked Uncomfortable - very small, (approx 17 sq m including beds and small kitchen/dining area). Dark - daylight came from small portholes , mostly obsured by other boats as it was in a harbour. Duvet was too small for the bed. Duvet covers were cheap polyester. Duvets were cheap and the pillows were lumpy. The bathroom door did not lock. There is wooden picnic bench outside the property but the entire outside area is untidy and overgrown so we had no wish to use it. PROS Good location, wifi and very good communication from hosts. The host visited us when we complained and cleaned the bathroom tiles and ceiling cobwebs which helped but did not address all our concerns. Being in the houseboat was quite a depressing experience made worse in the knowledge we had paid nearly 2K Euros for 5 days.

Cozy houseboat centrally located

We had a very nice few days on the houseboat. It is small and very cozy and equipped with everything you need. Especially nice is the seating area directly in front of the boat. The location is ideal, only 10 minutes walk from the main station and by bike you are also in 10 minutes almost everywhere. Last but not least: Casper is a very wonderful host. Definitely recommendable - and we will be very happy to come back!
