The beauty that supplants death.
The beauty that supplants death.
Walking through the killing fields is sobering at its brightest and heart shattering the rest of the time. It is, however, something that must be experienced lest we allow evil to continue in our world unabated.
A monument built to commemorate the victims of the Pol Pot regime. The building was designed to house the remains of the victims killed in the Choeung Ek, a killing field in Phnom Penh during the Pol Pot Regime. Visiting the Choeung Ek killing fields was a sad, but necessary experience. Visitors will get an audio tour of the killing fields, which includes the history of the place, the Pol Pot regime, as well as stories of the survivors of the Khmer Rouge. The graves were left untouched, so fragments of bones and clothes of the victims are still visible around the area. To get here, we arranged a tuktuk service with our hostel. It is about 25 to 30 minutes from the city centre. We also visited Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum after (the museum is in the city centre). It's a school (turned prison) in the city where they used to process prisoners before bringing them to the killing field. #phnompenh #cambodia #southeastasia #asia #travel #wanderlust #history #khmerrouge #architecture
One of the many killing fields in Cambodia, now turned into museum of genocide. More than 3 million people were killed during the Khmer Rouge regime of Pol Pot between 1975 and 1979. History needs to be learned and remembered, so we don't repeat it!
